The Supreme Court denied a request
by Attorney General Ken
Salazar to review earlier rulings which held that conflicting state
laws limited parole for sex offenders who committed crimes between 1993 and
1998. Lifetime parole has been required for some sex offenders since 1998.
Corrections Department Director John Suthers says 72 inmates who are in prison for violating parole will be released by Wednesday.
Another 44 whose cases must be reviewed by the sentencing judge will be released within a few days after that.
Suthers says an additional 251
people who are serving mandatory
parole after completing their full prison sentences will be
released from parole immediately. About 1145 more
inmates still serving their original prison terms will be released
with limited or no parole during the next 20 years.
